ResLife Portal is trying to do our part to promote social justice by acknowledging the pain, disparities, and racial discrimination that unfortunately continue to exist within the United States of America in the year 2020. Racism has no place in our society. The recent killing of George Floyd in Minnesota, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky, and so many other African Americans is beyond reprehensible. Our freedoms within the United States of America are intertwined. We see you, we hear you, and we stand in solidarity.

As George Floyd’s daughter Gianna, age 6, recently stated: “Daddy Changed the World.” Black Lives Matter. Be the change you want to see in the world.

“ResLife Portal stands for embracing: empathy, diversity, inclusion, and a respect for others,” Frank Garofalo, Principal Consultant of ResLife Portal, “this is a time for us to listen with a deeper understanding and empathy, and a time for us to work for change for equality for all humans.” ResLife Portal denounces actions and content that incites: violence, threatens violence, is excessively violent, contains harassing content, hate speech, racism, or discriminates against race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, marital status, age, sex, sexual identity, or sexual orientation.

Words from Leslie Dwight:

“What if 2020 isn’t cancelled? What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for? A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw — that it finally forces us to grow. A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from ignorant slumber. A year we finally accept the need for change. Declare change. Work for change. Become the change. A year we finally band together, instead of pushing each other further apart. 2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather the most important year of them all.”

In March 2019, ResLife Portal posted an op-ed blog post article: Teaching “Soft Skills,” Civility, Compassion, and Empathy, (link to article: https://blog.reslifeportal.com/teaching-soft-skills-civility-compassion-and-empathy-d9178690afb ) discussing an opinion how residence life has a unique “opportunity to provide students with opportunities to increase their awareness and potentially gaining a better understanding of ‘soft skills’.” These soft skills include civility, compassion, empathy, emotional intelligence (EQ), effective communication skills, leadership, teamwork, collaboration, integrity, work ethic, time management, dependability, adaptability, conflict resolution, flexibility, problem-solving, research, creativity, and many more.

June is the month many celebrate Pride, so this month in June 2020 work to make the world a better place through inclusion, diversity, unity, listening. understanding, solidarity, empathy, humanity, compassion, …together.
